The following are examples of well known grape varieties for both red and white wines.


The Reds


  • Shiraz / Syrah (Sah-ra or Shi-raz) are the two different names use to describe the same grape. Shiraz is primarily identified with the Australian made wines, which are considered the best in its class. The wine is known for its spicy blackberry, plum, and peppery flavors.

    Goes well with: beef, wild game, stews, and spicy cuisine such as Indian.

    Regions: Australia, California, France.

  • Merlot (Mer-lo) is a soft and mellow wine that is easy to drink. It is the perfect first wine for novices.

    Goes well with: beef, chicken, pasta, and chocolate.

    Regions: California, Chile, Australia.


  • Cabernet Sauvignon (Ka-ber-nay So-ve-nyon) is known as one of the world’s finest red wines. It usually undergoes oak treatment which gives it a slight vanilla flavoring, but the primary taste is black currant.

    Goes well with: red meats such as beef and lamb. Tastes great with brie and cheddar.

    Regions: Chile, Australia, California, France.


  • Pinot Noir (Pee-no Nwar) is considered by some to be the finest wine in the world. It is a difficult grape to grow and make into wine. It grows best in cooler climates. Pinot noir has an earthy taste, and includes such flavors as strawberry, plum and vanilla (oak treatment).

    Goes well with: lamb, grilled salmon, chicken, and pasta with red sauce.

    Regions: France, California, Oregon, New Zealand.
